MINCHIATE: Intimate Indulgences On Uchiwa is artist Kagema Shikari’s second queer erotic series, created over the course of five years following his first series inspired by shunga. Taking formal inspiration from uchiwa-e, the fan-shaped prints of Japan’s Edo period, the twenty-four works unfold like a series of paper windows. Through them, viewers are invited to quietly glimpse the desires, playfulness, intimacy, and erotic currents shared between queer bodies across traditional and contemporary festivals throughout the twelve months of the year. Departing from the outward, communal memories usually associated with seasonal festivities, the artist turns his gaze toward private interiors. Traditional images of seasonal observance are transformed into scenes of pleasure centered on the contemporary queer body. The circular composition of the fan both pays homage to ukiyo-e and suggests a dual perspective of being watched and actively peering in. Viewers seem to look through hidden paper windows in a garden, catching sight of the flow of queer desire within; inside the frame, entwined bodies become the objects of the gaze. Eroticism here is elegantly contained, yet it continues to spill beyond the edges of the window. Presented in the wake of the Shunga Exhibition in Shinjuku, Tokyo, this exhibition does not seek to stand alongside masters such as Katsushika Hokusai or Keisai Eisen. Rather, it hopes to carry forward and expand the imaginative possibilities of shunga within the context of contemporary queer art. Through delicate lines, lush colors, and compositions charged with bodily presence, the series opens further possibilities for queer intimacy and desire to be seen, written, and celebrated.
