During her first trip to Taiwan, Iwasaki Kanaha read *The Magician on the Skywalk* by Wu Ming-Yi on the flight. The line “Do you remember?” felt as though it were greeting her directly, leaving a deep and lasting impression. Iwasaki Kanaha had previously lived in Okinawa; Taiwan and Okinawa are geographically close and share similarities in climate and environment. In Taiwan, he encountered trees, flowers, and fruits reminiscent of those she had seen in her childhood, and through engaging with them, she sought to trace and capture the memories associated with them.
Iwasaki Kanaha’s works bring together her memories, pigments, clay, time, and various related elements, ultimately forming something even she herself cannot fully anticipate. Once completed, the works no longer belong solely to the artist; anyone can discover their own memories within them. Iwasaki Kanaha hopes that her works, like the memories she found in the landscapes she first encountered, will gently ask viewers, “Do you remember?”
