In 2023, Suman Weng traveled around the world. During this year-long journey, she ventured as far as Whitby Abbey in the UK and as far south as a tea restaurant in Hong Kong. She decided to encapsulate this unforgettable year in the form of an art exhibition. Suman Weng’s artistic style is rugged and unrestrained, full of wildness and freedom. She expresses her sense of dissonance with contemporary avant-garde art through visual impressions akin to “portraits.” To explain this dissonance, she draws on Max Weber’s theory of “disenchantment.” Growing up in an environment of traditional and superstitious values, she experiences inner conflict amidst avant-garde and scientific values. Whenever she tries to cut ties with those traditional and superstitious elements, unpurged “memories” inadvertently surface. Seeing her own artwork, she encounters the part of herself she has long wished to discard. Suman Weng hopes to explore the “psychological state after disenchantment” with her audience through her works. Her creations are guided by intuition and emotion, and she rebuilds order on a foundation of destruction. For instance, she may dismantle and cut her finished pieces with tools, allowing for uncontrolled accidents to occur. Thus, her artworks often feature many mechanisms that can be opened or movable parts. This process resembles a form of “disenchantment,” removing the fear of unknown magic. Opening and then closing the artworks, and even leaving the exhibition space, the audience is bound to be left with profound memories and impressions, even if they are negative.
