In family video recordings, there are moments from my childhood where I can be seen swaying my body while watching children’s programs and music shows on television. Whether it was my first trip abroad, going on a date with someone I liked, or cooking for someone, even as an adult I still sometimes find myself moving my body just as I did in childhood. At such moments, the melody within me can only be heard by myself, and may even be impossible to recall afterward.
As the nineteenth-century British poet John Keats once wrote, “Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter.” What we perceive is shaped not only by external sensations but also by things that remain unformed within us, stirring our imagination. Beyond simply moving to something audible, the moments when my body sways to these “unheard melodies” seem to become a source of vitality in my life.
When people appeal to or protest against injustice in society, I hope to capture scenes from everyday life and reinterpret them through painting, seeking a path toward resolution that does not rely on violence. For this reason, I have titled this series “Unheard Melodies.”
