“Tsubomi (つぼみ)” is a name commonly given to women in Japan. It also means a flower bud, symbolizing an immature state and the process of growth. At the same time, it suggests the space enclosed by two cupped hands, extending to the idea of the universe. The works in this exhibition originated from Koutarou’s exploration of beautiful girl characters in anime. He attempts to liberate them from the identity of being “dolls for convenient consumption.” In the “Tsubomi (つぼみ)” series, Koutarou builds upon existing characters by layering the messages he wishes to convey, extending his reflections on the impact of creation and its relationship with others. At this stage, the characters are no longer merely figures appearing within a story, but beings that viewers can reinterpret according to their own ideals. The character images are fired at 1,200 degrees Celsius onto ceramic vessels that serve as the primary support, and are then painted on the surface with pigments. Through the permanence of ceramics and the different temporal qualities of the materials, he expresses his understanding of the long passage of time. While developing “Tsubomi (つぼみ),” the artist became aware that characters can be presented through different material supports. On computers and mobile phones, they appear as flat images; as three-dimensional figurines, they can be touched; when printed on fabric, they can even be worn and become one with the body. This led him to question the necessity of characters possessing “human” bodies. Characters are entities derived from humans, not actual humans themselves; therefore, they should possess bodies that are unique and intrinsic to their own nature. This idea forms the core of Koutarou’s creative practice, and in these works, it is concretely expressed through the use of ceramics as the primary medium. 「Tsubomi」は日本人女性の名前や花の蕾を意味し、未熟さや成長の過程も含みます。また、手のひらで空間を包む姿から宇宙を表現する場合もあります。この作品は、美少女キャラクターが「都合のいい人形」として消費される存在から解放される姿を探り、生まれたものです。 乙うたろうも創作している過程で、他者の影響や関係性の中で広がるべきと考え、既存のキャラクターに彼なりの表現を積み上げました。キャラクターは物語に登場するだけでなく、観者が理想に近づけて書き換えることもできる存在です。この発想から、キャラクターという下敷きの上に、1200度の高温で焼き締められた永い時の流れを感じさせる陶器を用いてキャラクターの身体を再考する《つぼみ》シリーズが生まれました。 乙うたろうは《つぼみ》を構想する過程で、キャラクターが様々な媒体で異なる表現をされていることに気づきました。パソコンやスマートフォンでは厚みのない平面的な映像のキャラクターが映し出され、フィギュアでは立体として触られ、布にプリントされたキャラクターは身に纏えます。このように観察を進める中で、キャラクターは人の身体を持つ必要があるのか？という疑問が生まれました。もともと人から派生したキャラクターは、人そのものではないため、むしろキャラクター独自の身体を持つべきであり、そこに創造性の本質があると感じ、その考えが《つぼみ》の作品に反映されています。
